Malaga · A City of Phoenician Origin

Malaga is a city with a long history dating back to the Phoenician civilization.

Currently, in the Capital of Malaga it is possible to see the testimony of a Phoenician culture developed more than 4,500 years ago. Subsequently, the city passed into the hands of the Carthaginians and then the Romans. Although it is noteworthy the Muslim origin that would later come to stay for 500 years establishing the Arab culture.

“At that time, there was no comparison with the current size of the Malaga City Council. The city was limited to the interior of the fortress of Gibralfaro Castle»

When was Gibralfaro Castle built and where is it located?

The Alcázar of Gibralfaro was built in the course of the 14th century.

Right in the central part, in front of the Málaga cove, Gibralfaro forms part of the southern foothills of the Montes de Málaga (mountain range of the Penibética range, formed by materials from the Maláguide Complex).

The mount is covered by a thick forest of pines and eucalyptus. The Castle or Alcázar of Gibralfaro crowns its summit, and other monuments or historic buildings such as the Alcazaba, the Roman Theater, the Seminary and the Puerta Oscura Gardens are located on its slopes. Also noteworthy are the views of the entire Bay that are offered from the top of the Alcázar. If you travel renting a car in Malaga, we recommend you make a stop at the free parking lot of the Alcazaba and visit the incredible views of the Gibralfaro Viewpoint.

Who built the Alcazar of Gibralfaro?

In the 14th century, the Arabs ruled, led by Abderramán III, who ordered the construction of the Castle with the aim of defending the Alcazaba and safeguarding his troops.

The Alcazaba of Malaga was a fortification inside which was the Nasrid Palace. Currently, joint visits can be made to visit both “El Castillo de Gibralfaro” and “La Alcazaba de Málaga”.

The level of protection of the Palace is overwhelming, being necessary to pass through 8 fortification gates to finally reach the place where the king was staying. All this you can see if you decide to visit it.

Is it free to visit the Gibralfaro Castle?

The visit to both the Castle and the Alcazaba is FREE on Sundays from 2:00 p.m. For the other days, you should consult the different schedules and rates.

We recommend that you do not miss the opportunity to visit one of the most emblematic historical monuments of Malaga 🤗
